What’s your favourite Wong Kar Wei movie?
What’s your fav Wong Kar Wei film?
Love this photo by Vanessa Ng at my show last Thursday & reflections on WKW & indie films.
I was 20 years old before I saw “Fallen Angels” (1995) and “Chungking Express” (1994). While they are also problematic, at the time it was the first time I saw relatable characters of my ethnicity and culture (or “similar”). “Fallen Angels” has a very specific sex scene which was and (I believe) still tends to be pretty rare even in art-house cinema. “Chungking Express” had me mildly obsessed with the song “California Dreaming”.
Liked the quirky characters who swap identities and jobs in a playful yet morose way and the dream like cinematography.
I’m afraid I’ll disappoint you by saying I wasn’t a fan of “In the Mood for Love” and irritated my friends by talking through it at the cinema. 🤣 Found it a bit like a fashion show & also too cishet (didn’t know that term in 2002). But I know many people love it! 😌
I loved working at City Screen in York on the kiosk & bar, which meant I got free film tickets!
I was the Press & Publicity Officer at the the World* Cinema Soc at York Uni for 2 years. I used my ink drawings of the film posters I drew to promote the events to apply for my Masters in Illustration & Animation.
The films I saw were very white and cishet but considering I was at a uni without visual arts (at the time) it was a positive way to connect with people and enrich my experience.
It’s funny that at my grand & miraculous age, I finally made a short film, even if it’s “just” a music video - with an ESEA director and team.
I think the shots and lighting in “Asians Have Feelings Too” are stunning and cinematic. The sarcasm and playfulness might connect to some aspects of WKW too..
