New Projects - Autumn 2020
From gruesome Elizabethan “fairytale” keyboard performance, music for groundbreaking history podcast and a few interviews later.. I’m almost feeling ready to hibernate. Some people have been jealous that I’ve been so productive! I’ll be honest.. I’ve been doing lots of projects to try and not feel terrible! Creativity helps give me focus in a world that seems grim, scary and at times, even pointless. Making art (which includes music) is energy work. It is revitalising. Art reminds us that humans have to a large extent created the realities we live in. We can change the realities. Art can heal and create meaning out of chaos. Art transforms us.
That said, I am extremely lucky to have been around for as long as I have. Some of the projects have come out of accidental real-life meetings over numerous years, while a few have come out of recent internet friendships. So there is a lot to be said for trusting, keeping going and also, making an effort to grow and find like-minded folks in positive ways. I hope you enjoy taking a quick look through the projects and have the chance to check out one or two in greater depth.
Thanks very much for your support. #SupportTheArts

USURP GALLERY commissioned me to create a response to a poetic, surreal brief asking about something called “The New Normal Memorial”. I drew local trees and created performance poems for a zine called “Homegrown”, made a video of one of the poems combined with piano improvisation and visual art (“The Quest”), and also an audio piece of a set of poems again with piano improv and also sounds recorded from my home and around it. The themes I explored included race, lockdown domestic drama and queerness.
Suitable for: My work is suitable for all ages, however the themes may be better understood by those aged 12 upwards. Various artists’ work will form part of the overall show so bear that in mind.
GROUNDBREAKING NEW PODCAST - Adventures in Time & Gender
WHEN: Episode 1 released 28/10/20. Episode 2 released 04/11/20
Check it out/ find out more about the show: http://adventuresintimeandgender.org
Written by Jason Barker, directed by Krishna Istha and powered by MANY incredible trans and non binary creatives including Travis Alabanza, Emma Frankland, Fox Fisher and many many more people who have brightened my horizons over the years.
Transphobia-signalling is rife in the news and distracts the public from important, humanitarian crises and problems created made by law-makers. Yet the impact of transphobia and fuelling makes life dangerous for trans and gender non-conforming people (including intersex people) of all ages, including young people. One of the arguments that transphobic people use is that sex and gender are the same thing. So it makes sense to travel through time and speak to sexologists and see what they make of it all.
For those familiar with my music, the theme tune is in a style you’ve NOT heard from me before!
Suitable for: This series is being released and I have not heard it all yet. I understand that the likely age suitability is for mid-teens upwards. This is just my opinion though responses to material can be very different.
