POETRY > Sonnet 2: Iambic meter is a hellish curse
Iambic meter is a hellish curse (Terza Rima sonnet)
Iambic meter is a hellish curse,
it hit me hard on Tuesday of this week
'cos all I did before was write blank verse.
For quite some time I've been a wordy geek
so I felt fine to write one birthday ode
iambic's now the way I think and speak!
With words I have been cleaning my abode
and mopping up the corners of my mind
I found my sink with sonnets overflowed…
“You wrote this just to mock me,” Mum opined -
my explanation seemed to make things worse
well hid, affection can be hard to find.
I treasure useful skills I can reverse
iambic helps my anxious thoughts disperse.
NOTES:
The rhyme scheme I used was: aba bcb cdc dad aa
Poem written on May 15th, 2020.
This sonnet is a terza rima (3-line scheme called tercets), “first used” by Dante Alighieri The Divine Comedy. It was either a coincidence that this poem begins with a reference to hell or else my mind was doing something cool…! You decide…
