Submit your artwork here by Wednesday October 6th, 2021. (Please check “What Art Am I Looking For” below)
WHAT ART AM I LOOKING FOR?
A quick example could be my sharpie art on the banner above. The bit that says “Asians have feelings too in a red squiggly shape. To be selected art will have these features:
Original work by you.
The only words will be: “ASIANS HAVE FEELINGS TOO” (Capitals or small letters)
Bold, clear lettering so the words can be spotted easily. Avoid really thin lines except for shading.
Marker pens and sharpies would be perfect, but you can theoretically use any medium.
Colours - vibrant, upbeat, colours preferred. If your art is black and white, a filter may be added as the video will be colourful.
Dimensions - square, 4:3, 9:16, circle anything goes.
If possible, please make it on a piece of paper of at least 21 cm x 21 cm (that’s the short edge of the A4 paper). Scan it at 300 dpi at least.
Please see the “Please do not use” list below!
! PLEASE DO NOT USE:
Lettering that mimics East and/or Southeast Asian characters. Read an article about faux Asian fonts. (Content notes: racist imagery and descriptions).
Collage - e.g. artwork including lettering by other artists. Even if it’s just one letter or a part of an image, I want this video to go places and not end up in court!
Symbols or imagery designed to incite bigotry or discrimination, or which culturally appropriates.
We might not agree on what falls under the above, but The Mollusc Dimension and team will make the selection.
I’D LOVE TO SEE WHAT YOU COME UP WITH!
WAIT - WHO ARE YOU?
Hello. I’m an artist and my name is The Mollusc Dimension. Like many other East and South East Asians and allies I was deeply disturbed and alarmed to hear about sino-racism. I also experienced coronaracism twice myself in my local area, the devastating impact of which I have written a blog about for besea.n.
What does one do with painful and scary feelings? I got together with my old friend, Imagination, and we wrote a song to promote positive ESEA+ representation in the UK and beyond. It’s called Asians Have Feelings Too.
But it’s more than a song about just racism. As a gen x, British-born, Chinese, LGBTIQ+ person, I have experienced a lot of discrimination. And at the same time, I carried the weight of not being allowed to express myself openly for fear of rejection and hostility.
Almost as bad as discrimination is the fear and negative voices I have carried with me since I was little which told me I must be hide how I felt.
The wonderful QTIBIPOC, BIPOC and ally grassroots artists I have met over the years have helped shape me.
It’s been amazing meeting new people too, and a lot of fun working on the track with British Tamil producer and dancer, Nush (@MusicByNush).
A little shockingly, considering my extensive portfolio, Asians Have Feelings Too is my first ever music video to be made by a professional team! With my grassroots intersectional feminist background (since the early 2000s!) I want to make some space for ESEA and allies of all ages and abilities to create a sign in response to the song, and invite them to submit the artwork for possible inclusion in the video.

Vibrantly colourful, mixed media banner. On the left is the title of the event, boldly drawn in sharpie, in warm, red/pink/orange colours. At the centre is a photo of an East-Asian in a black tuxedo with gold octopus collar pins and a black homberg hat, standing with arms holding jacket. A small cartoon drawing of the same person wearing a fish pattern shirt and waving can be seen. From the left bottom corner are marker pens.
