"You can't make a punk song about your grandma" (someone exclaimed after hearing my song, “Time to Play”). Well guess what I'm serving at my live "Vibrance" on Thursday 8th April ........... GRANDPARENTS!
Soooo excited about this live event. Please book via the link in bio and spread the word. The blurb is updated and accessibility info can be found if you click on "BOOK".
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO ME?
It's the first time I've had the chance for in-depth look at my work. The closest to a solo show .... I've been performing since 1985. It's #intersectional...
WHY ARE YOU SERVING GRANDPARENTS?
This image goes with the track, "Soya Milk" (voiced by Urie Jo) on my album and at the event, I'll be explaining the story behind the track at the event! I'm a 3rd generation musician and music teacher. My grandpa and his brother rebelled against their father's career ideas and they both found a way to (self?) study music and earn money. My grandpa met my grandma while he was playing piano in a restaurant. My grandma was sent to HK to escape the invasion and became a schoolteacher. While she was not trained to write music like my grandpa, she started studying singing in retirement and performed on stage. This continued the enjoyment of performing that she had at school girl, where she was often asked to play boys' parts because of her height... notice any parallels?! 😜
I transitioned after my grandpa had passed away, and my family were very anxious about grandma not finding out, citing health reasons / not shocking her etc etc. But actually they just didn't want to accept it. As it turned out, by the time we told her, she said, "It's ok. Some people are OLD FASHIONED. I am not." Then she gave me a new Chinese name.
So.. is it punk to serve your granparents?
1. Well probably not for traditional punks.. Wait.. traditional punks.. what does that mean???!
2. I don’t care! I’m doing it.
